The Heavy Equipment Operator’s primary responsibility is to complete assigned tasks safely and accurately using recycling/processing equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Equipment Operating
- Operate heavy equipment (loader, backhoe, excavator, forklift, etc.) safely and proficiently for purpose of waste disposal.
- Inspect all inbound material for contaminants and presort material as needed prior to processing.
- Direct public to proper dumping location and move material for other vehicles to dump on tipping floor.
- Operate in a manner that will not abuse the equipment, (i.e. spinning tires, over-revving engine when shifting, exceeding operating limits, overloading bucket, lifting tires off the ground, etc.)
Top-loading Trailers & Hostler
- Load trailers to ensure maximum payloads.
- Ensure all loose debris has been safely removed from trailer.
- Inspect trailer is ready (i.e. no debris, trailer damage, etc.) prior to loading.
- Move loaded trailer to the correct staging area.
Compactor
- Excavator operator loads residual onto compactor belt.
- Communicate that compactor is full; and assist on disconnecting containers from compactor.
- Move loaded trailer to the correct staging area.
- Clean and maintains area around compactor to ensure it is free of debris.
Paperwork, Equipment and/or Processing Floor Cleaning
- Pre- & post-daily inspection sheets
- Clean equipment filters as needed, along with lubricate equipment as required to insure against premature wear/and or failure.
- Clean processing floor and/or equipment to remove any debris to help reduce blowing of trash outside facility.
- Communicate with operation supervisor when fuel, oil or other supplies are needed in sufficient time to minimize equipment down time.
- Report to operations supervisor and/or mechanics all maintenance, repairs or adjustments needed to the equipment at the end of each shift or sooner if required.
Safety
- Immediately report all accidents to operations supervisor and/or operations manager.
- Report to operations supervisor and/or operations manager of any chemical or hazardous waste dumped on the floor; if possible, please get the company and truck number.
- Wear and maintain proper safety devices to insure protection from injury or illness.
- Operate the equipment in a manner to ensure safety of the operator, fellow workers, and the customers.
- Report all unsafe conditions to the operations supervisor.
- Attend all safety meetings.
Working Conditions/Environment
- Occasional exposure to extreme weather conditions.

- Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance.
- Two year’s experience operating similar equipment.
